Let’s Change The World.

If it is possible for something to go wrong, or even impossible, it will go wrong. There’s just been some setbacks in getting my store up and running. But I suppose that it’s expected in the beginning. I know I get over excited and start my website and start promoting long before I should – so I hope that you don’t get too bored of waiting on me.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel though. I’ve gotten everything I need outside of more supplies and tools (which is very important). But I’m on a limited budget, unfortunately and sometimes I have to wait to get items that I need. But once I have my store running I will have money allocated for shipping etc. So there wont be any worries there.

I don’t know how I just found this out – but the store – Bamboo, Beads & Bling ( http://www.bamboobeadsandbling.com ) offers FREE workshops – and lots of them! There are almost THIRTY different workshops available. I’m going to check this out in more detail because I am so close to this store that I could be at every single one! *laughs* They will be sick of me. I need to see if you need money for supplies (which I would think you would – but you never know). Either way it’s really great! They are located in the heart of Victoria’s Chinatown (which is the oldest Chinatown in Canada) on Fisgard St.

Here is a list of the October Workshops! Maybe I’ll see you there!

  • 10/05/19 ( 10am – 12:30pm ) Knotty Class
  • 10/05/19 ( 1pm – 3pm ) Making Malas
  • 10/05/19 ( 3:30pm – 4:30pm ) Stretchy Bracelet
  • 10/19/19 ( 10am – 11:30am ) Intro To Earrings
  • 10/19/19 ( 12pm – 2pm ) Cascade Earrings
  • 10/19/19 ( 2:30pm – 4pm ) Herringbone Earrings
  • 10/26/19 (10am – 1pm ) Woven Bracelet

So as I said all things can and will go wrong. And I meant it. I got sick this past week. Just a cough and cold but because my lungs are still so scarred from when I had endocarditis – I’m having a hard time breathing or doing much of anything. So I’m just trying to relax and hopefully get over this sooner than later. It’s hard enough when I’m not sick. *laughs*

I was supposed to have tax returns and GST checks mailed to me, but they somehow were sent to an address from years ago, don’t ask me how. So I have been dealing with that as well. Gotta love government issues. Takes hours to get a hold of a person when you call in. Anyway these were allocated towards part of my business and so now that is another reason to fall behind. So once again I’m sorry that it’s taking forever. Some of it is my fault, some of it is beyond my control. But I’m working on fixing it all as we speak. And get better at the same time…

On another topic, does anyone know about the Extinction Rebellion? I know a lot of people don’t agree that climate change is a problem, but a man who works in my building who actually wrote a great song that I will post below, has been talking to me about this and went to one of their meetings so I guess that next week they are blocking the bridge by my house (again). I might go check it out this time.

Anyway here is the song he wrote for Greta Thunberg and Climate Change called “Let’s Change The World”.

Chris is a great guy and a great musician who has really found his place wanting to fight for climate change. That – I will support! Please subscribe to his YouTube Channel – Plastic Ocean https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXrjVIs3eKiWS_dqwk1pDzg and share his song with all of your friends, family etc.

That’s about all I have to say for now. I know I’m a little all over the place today – must be my cold. *laughs*

Stay Strong, Stay Safe.

What Is The Meaning Of This ‘Beads to Recovery’ Nonsense?

WooCommerce

Some of you may be wondering “Why ‘Beads TO Recovery’?” or “What Does That Even Mean Anyway?” So I figured I would get this out of the way as soon as possible. Maybe it will make a future FAQ list? Now I’m getting ahead of myself. Back it up.

So, I decided to call my store and my jewelry that I’m making “Beads to Recovery” for a few reasons. The main reason is the most obvious, at least I think so anyway. When I was in the hospital with Endocarditis earlier this year, I was told I had a life or death decision to make. Either work on getting clean and sober, or die. So from that point on I have been in recovery from being addicted to drugs – mainly heroin.

While talking with doctors, counselors, social workers, friends and family about my recovery I was given a piece of advice that has changed my life for the better. I was told that I needed to get a hobby or something to replace the void that was left in my life without drugs. I didn’t quite see the importance of this advice until later. But, when I finally got out of the hospital I was trying to think of what I could do to pass the time. Something that I enjoyed or could be proud of doing. Something somewhat productive, but I had fun doing. Well, that turned out to be fooling around with beads and a loom. I never really had a desire to work with beads before, but for some reason it just jumped out at me right at this point in my life. So by me beading and working on my website, which I also enjoy doing, it is helping me in my recovery.

So that is why I called it ‘Beads to Recovery’. It’s ‘TO Recovery’ because I’m still in the process and the beads are basically saving my life. I was ashamed and embarrassed about my addiction and I kept it very well hidden for many years from the people closest to me. But when I was in the hospital – the truth came out and the flood of support that I got was so unbelievably great and completely unexpected to me. I guess that the support I received from my family, friends and even strangers made it easier for me to be honest about it here and to talk about my problems without holding back.

I’ve still got a long battle ahead, and I may fall down. I may fall down repeatedly. But I’m not going to be hard on myself over it, because it’s hard enough already! As long as I don’t stop trying – I know that I will make a full recovery one day. You know when people tell you to take things one day at a time? Well this is definitely one of those situations. My life is forever ‘TODAY’. Yesterday is gone and I can’t worry about tomorrow. All I can do is live right now. And if ‘Today’ goes right? When tomorrow comes, do the same thing all over again. With my new found love of beads and my support circle – I know that I will one day be a recovered addict.

Thank you so very much for taking time out of your life to visit my little corner and read about little ol’ me. I really do appreciate it more than you can imagine. So last week I was walking through Value VIllage and came across a bead loom, which is exactly what I had been looking for. I had already picked up some beads for practice and now I have got the loom.

The Loom that I bought looks exactly like the one pictured to the left.

I have not gone to any classes, just read books and taught myself the rest. I know there are plenty of beaders out there so if you have any tips on what type of loom would work best for making bracelets, necklaces etc. Let me know in the comments. I have been told this one does it all, but I am not completely sure, so any knowledge you may have would be greatly appreciated.

“I am quite nervous about stepping foot inside somewhere that everyone knows what they are doing and what all the pieces and tools are called and I am a little afraid of looking like an idiotBut part of my recovery is to do things that make me uncomfortable, as those are probably going to be the most rewarding things for me to accomplish.

So please do not hold back! If you have got any advice or just something to say to help me start on my way, I would be very excited to hear it. I know there are so many talented ladies (and gents) out there and I want to be one of them 🙂

If you know of any classes starting up in Victoria please feel free to post them on here. I am sure I am not the only one interested in this, considering the number of bead stores we have in our little city. Also Feel free to let me know about beading classes or your neighborhood bead stores in your location, wherever you may be. I would love to see the kind of stores every where else has!

I also found this gem in Value Village. It is called The Beading Answer Book by Karen Morris. So far I have found it to be almost a beading Bible, with everything I could ever imagine being inside. Beading with a loom, Beading without. What all the lingo means and how to do just about anything I can think of to do with beading.

Buy The Beading Answer Book by Karen Morris on Amazon.

I am sure that there is a lot more to learn as well, so if you have any books or websites that you think are just as good or BETTER than The Beading Answer Book, then please comment with links to where I can find them.

I have also thought about possibly incorporating old school FriendShip Bracelets into the mix with or without beads, or just for finishing off ends etc. I am quite excited for where this may go. Hopefully I will get some samples up soon for you to check out. But in the meantime, please keep sending me your ideas and helpful hints or just whatever you feel like saying!

Till next time. Stay safe and stay true to yourself.
